What is Couples’ Travel Insurance,
and Do We Need It?
Couples’ travel insurance is a joint policy that covers two adults travelling together under the same
plan. Whether you’re married, cohabiting, or civil partners, a shared policy can be a simpler and more
cost-effective way to stay protected abroad.
At Gigasure, a couple is simply two adults living at the same UK address, no need to be married or
in a civil partnership. All couples, including LGBTQ+ partnerships, are welcome. Both travellers
must be on the same trip and covered under the same policy.
Most couples’ travel insurance policies include
cover for:
- Emergency medical treatment and repatriation
- Trip cancellation or curtailment
- Lost baggage and valuables
- Delays and missed departures
- Personal liability and legal cover
Even the best-planned trips can take a turn, despite all the planning in the world. One joint policy means you're both covered – and supported – from start to finish. This makes the whole process simpler and more seamless for both of you.
Why Choose a Joint Policy Instead
of Two Separate Ones?
A shared policy can offer:
One quote, one application – less admin (no one wants to deal with heaps of admin, after all)
One premium – often cheaper
One claim – faster resolution if plans change
Matching cover levels for both travellers

What Affects the Price of Your Policy?
Several factors can influence your premium:
- Your destination
- Trip length
- Ages of both travellers
- Pre-existing medical conditions
- Pre-existing medical conditions
- Activities like skiing or cruising
- The level of excess you choose
What’s Included and What’s Not
Covered
Not Covered (unless added or declared)
Always check your full policy wording to know exactly what’s covered and what is not. We recommend
doing this well in advance of your trip so you can make any changes if needed.
Do We Need Insurance if We’ve Got a GHIC?
Yes. While a GHIC (or EHIC) provides emergency healthcare access in EU countries, it
doesn’t replace travel insurance.
It won’t cover the following:
- Private hospitals or treatment
- Repatriation to the UK
- Non-medical issues like cancellations or theft
Also, each traveller needs their own GHIC, as one card
doesn’t cover two people. This is a common
misconception for couples, so please, remember this.
