What is Couples’ Travel Insurance,
and Do We Need It?

Couples’ travel insurance is a joint policy that covers two adults travelling together under the same
plan. Whether you’re married, cohabiting, or civil partners, a shared policy can be a simpler and more
cost-effective way to stay protected abroad.

At Gigasure, a couple is simply two adults living at the same UK address, no need to be married or
in a civil partnership. All couples, including LGBTQ+ partnerships, are welcome. Both travellers
must be on the same trip and covered under the same policy.

Most couples’ travel insurance policies include
cover for:

  • Emergency medical treatment and repatriation
  • Trip cancellation or curtailment
  • Lost baggage and valuables
  • Delays and missed departures
  • Personal liability and legal cover

Even the best-planned trips can take a turn, despite all the planning in the world. One joint policy means you're both covered – and supported – from start to finish. This makes the whole process simpler and more seamless for both of you.

Why Choose a Joint Policy Instead
of Two Separate Ones?

A shared policy can offer:

  • One quote, one application – less admin (no one wants to deal with heaps of admin, after all)

  • One premium – often cheaper

  • One claim – faster resolution if plans change

  • Matching cover levels for both travellers

How Much Does Couples’ Travel Insurance Cost?

Here’s a quick guide to typical prices for joint policies:

Destination Typical Cost (per couple)
UK-only £10–£20
Europe £26–£57
Worldwide (excl. USA) £52–£88
Worldwide (incl. USA) £84–£182

The prices above are based on a 7-day trip for a couple in their 20s with no preexisting medical conditions.

Tip: If you’re planning more than two trips a year, annual cover often works out cheaper.

What Affects the Price of Your Policy?

Several factors can influence your premium:

  • Your destination
  • Trip length
  • Ages of both travellers
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Activities like skiing or cruising
  • The level of excess you choose

What’s Included and What’s Not

Covered

Check Emergency medical & repatriation
Check Trip cancellation or curtailment
Check Baggage & valuables
Check Delays & missed departure
Check Personal liability & legal help

Not Covered (unless added or declared)

Cross Undeclared medical conditions
Cross Travel to red-list or FCDO-warned areas
Cross Unattended or lost property without proof
Cross Incidents involving alcohol or drugs
Cross Adventure sports without the right add-on

Always check your full policy wording to know exactly what’s covered and what is not. We recommend
doing this well in advance of your trip so you can make any changes if needed.

Do We Need Insurance if We’ve Got a GHIC?

Yes. While a GHIC (or EHIC) provides emergency healthcare access in EU countries, it
doesn’t replace travel insurance.

It won’t cover the following:

  • Private hospitals or treatment
  • Repatriation to the UK
  • Non-medical issues like cancellations or theft

Also, each traveller needs their own GHIC, as one card
doesn’t cover two people. This is a common
misconception for couples, so please, remember this.

Optional Add-Ons to Personalise Your Policy

At Gigasure, we believe that a one-size-fits-all approach to your policy is no good. That’s why we
proudly offer a range of add-ons to help you customise your policy to fit your needs, ensuring
you are not paying for a policy that is not working for you.

Our add-ons include the following:

  • Winter sports – covers skiing and snowboarding (for the adventurous couples amongst us!)
  • Cruise cover – for missed ports or onboard medical costs
  • Gadget insurance – protects phones, tablets, e-readers
  • Separate product –Car Hire Excess – avoids large rental charges for car hire damage

What If One of Us Has a Pre-Existing Condition?

We’ll guide you through your options clearly and fairly, but it’s imperative that you tell us about any pre-
existing condition so you can ensure you get a policy that suits your unique needs. Failure to declare a
condition can lead to a policy that does not provide the coverage you need.

You’ll need to declare it when getting a quote. Depending on the condition, it may:

  • Declare all pre-existing conditions when getting your quote
  • Increase your premium
