Frequently asked questions
When renting a vehicle in the USA or Canada, you can opt for a rental agreement that either includes or excludes insurance. The primary insurance required is Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), which provides cover for damage, theft, and loss of use of the rental vehicle.
If you book your car rental from the UK or through a UK-based website, your agreement will often include cover for third-party liability, CDW, and theft. However, excess (deductible) charges are becoming more common, especially for cars booked in advance where CDW/LDW is included as part of the rental package.
With Gigasure’s USA and Canada policy, you’re protected against these excess charges and more. Our cover also reimburses you for damage to vulnerable parts of the vehicle that are often excluded from the rental company’s own insurance, such as tyres, windscreens, roofs, and undercarriages.
In the USA and Canada, car rental companies often require Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) insurance before handing over the keys. These covers can cost anywhere between from $10 to $60 per day per day when purchased directly from the rental desk.
Depending on where you’re travelling, rental companies in certain states or provinces may also offer Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI). This additional cover increases your third-party liability protection, which is often a legal requirement but can vary significantly from state to state. In some areas, mandatory third-party insurance levels may be relatively low, prompting rental companies to suggest additional cover.
While CDW/LDW and SLI are typically sold separately at the rental desk, you can still achieve significant savings by choosing Gigasure for your CDW/LDW protection and purchasing any additional liability cover directly from the rental company, if required. Our affordable, flexible policies ensure you’re covered without overpaying, leaving you free to enjoy your journey with confidence.
With Gigasure, Annual Multi-Trip policies for the USA start from £43.78 while a Single Trip policy will cost £4.77 a day based on a three-day policy. Both types of policies allow you to add a voluntary £250 excess to reduce your premium. On Annual policies, you can remove cover in the UK to reduce your premium and you can select the level of Excess/CDW cover and the number of continuous days of cover for your rental.
